Accidental Immigrants / The Dunera dossier

Front cover of Walter Dunn’s diary with the words: All Australian Exercise Book.

Many of the interned refugees, including Walter Dunn, chose to use their free time to chronicle their journeys. Dunn’s journals tell his story of immigration to England to pursue a degree in medicine. A practicing physician when the war began, Dunn was interned before being sent to Australia on the HMT Dunera. Despite enduring deplorable conditions on the ship, the refugees survived the journey and their time in Australian internment camps until their eventual release. Dunn eventually immigrated to Vancouver in 1948 and led a successful career as a physician.
